Oklahoma City Corvette Club 50th Aniversary Celebration!!
On Saturday June 12th we celebrated the Oklahoma City Corvette Club’s Golden Anniversary beginning with a picnic at Mitch Park in Edmond. The weather was perfect with a light breeze and a slight overcast to keep the temperature down. Guests started arriving around 11am with Larry & Sharon Matthesen driving his old ’67 coupe. Steve & Karen along with Pat took care of providing the group with hamburgers and hotdogs and there were plenty of chips and deserts to go around. We need to add a special thanks to my crew of helpers Tom, Ron and Steve Surdick, and if anyone noticed the sign at the entrance looking unusual ask Tom & Ron to tell you their side of the story!
I took a moment to address everyone there with a brief over view of the club, its origin starting out as the Oklahoma Corvette Club, and some of the changes over the years. I also wanted the previous members to know of the accomplishments of the last decade and how we’ve tried to carry on with the ideas and traditions that were started long ago.
Later that evening we meet at the Clarion for a night of fun with a room full of past and present members enjoying tales of days gone by. The room was given a special touch of Corvette with Carol & Russell Smith’s help. We had our Anniversary cake, and a spread of appetizers as well as adult beverages. Someone was even seen dancing with a craft of wine. There was more memorabilia from the early days for current members to view as members who were unable to attend the earlier function continued to arrive. By the nights end the dance floor saw more moves than pictures can capture. However, I did manage to catch a glimpse of a partial moon peeking through.
Past members and guests in attendance included but not limited to: Steve & Cheryl Surdick, Ron & Mary Drennan, Alton & Susan Dobbins, Bob & Connie Williams, Don & Gayle Harper, Jim & Gail Fleetwood, Kenny & Jamie Chuculate, Leo Cravens, Ray & Margo Schlageter, Ron and Joetta Truelove.
If I had to measure the success of the event I need to look no further than the smiles on the faces of those who attended. I feel bad for those who could not make it for you truly missed out on a great time. For Glenda and me it was special as we knew everyone that was there. The past members were “our club” when we joined and those of you who are with us now are “the club”. I hope it was as memorable for you as it was for us and I am looking forward to the next one in five years!
